possibly one of my most revealing (and not to mention the funnest) travelogue posts thus far

mukoi is an orang ulu ritual which involves a rope – what our group would an eeeeeeeeeevil rope…

[warning… banyak gambar. kalau lu punya loading slow, not my problem.]

so everyone holds on to a long piece of rope and visit every pintu in a longhouse…

at every pintu, a bottle of tuak will emerge and everyone takes a shot of it…

and if after everyone had had a shot and the bottle has not finished yet, everyone gets a second shot… need i mention that there were 25 pintu altogether?

meet my host, my guide, my friend, mike…

mukoi, as i understand it is a planting ritual that is carried out after the paddly seedlings are planted…

the procession hums an almost haunting chant as we move from door to door…

there is no escape… if you don’t take your shots, you are punished…

have i introduced you to my friend, mike..?

after drinking, they make you dance… let me amplify it… they FORCE you to dance…

after that they make you… FORCE you… to drink some more…

and after THAT, they force you to DANCE some more…

and the cycle goes on…

as for me, after entah berapa pintu, my photo angles dah entah hapa dah…

and then it all started getting fuzzy…

and then i had to put down the camera… in case i broke it. things were just getting too wild here. out in the middle of almost bloody nowhere. i’m in a wooden longhouse by a river, stomping and chanting to a worn out cassette playing on a hi-fi stereo powered by a diesel generator… plus, i had this itch to dance… the kenyah lady told me that i had to sweat at those shots out…

apa lagi?
